St Olafs Big Day in Croke Park
We started training in December. We worked hard in training listening to our coaches Mr Maher and Mr Ruane. We practised our skills and touch.
The big day arrived on the 9th of June, when we were playing Holy Rosary in the final and everyone was excited.
We travelled in a convoy of cars all beeping as we set off from school to Croke Park. There was great excitement.
When we arrived you could feel the excitement in the air. We made our way to the Hogan stand and went into the dressing room where we felt like professional players. We then went into the warm up area. It was a great experience warming up like real professionals.
Time had arrived and it was time to go out on to the pitch. We were all so happy, we worked hard all year and wanted to win.
The supporters were amazing cheering us on. We started well when Jack Feehan hit the ball into William Connors for an early goal. Then the keeper pucked the sliothar out it landed dead on the ground. Michael McGreevy scooped up the ball started soloing and got fouled. James Oliver stepped up for the free and put it in the back of the net.
The full forward line played excellently including great performances from William Connors, Daniel Gilsenan and Louis Noonan. Another excellent performance from the half forward of Eoghan O Domhnaill, Michael McGreevy and Senan Phelan. The midfielders Jack Feehan and James Oliver had a solid game winning all the ball in midfield and feeding ball to the forwards and a few nice frees from James Oliver. More great performances in the half backs from captain Willie Connors, Daragh O Brien and Jack Maher. The full backs had great games- nothing got past them particularly Eric Betts, Briain Doyle and David Cunningham.
Goalkeeper Cian Maher had a superb game stopping everything.
In the second half we had the lead but we knew we had to keep focus, because we still had another 25 minutes to play, so we kept fighting until the end.
When the final whistle blew we erupted with screams and shouts it was a great moment. We then got to lift the trophy, and the supporters as well as ourselves shouted with happiness.
And that was our big day at Croke Park.
